Bile
Bile is secreted in 2 stages by the liver

1) The intitial Bile secretion contains large amounts of bile acids, cholesterol, lecithin etc and is secreted into the bile canaliculi that lie between the hepatic cells in the hepatic plates

2) From the canaliculi, the bile empties into the terminal bile ducts, the hepatic duct and finally in the common bile duct. From the common bile duct, the bile either empties directly into the duodenum or is diverted through the cystic duct into the gallbladder. On its way through the duct a watery solution of Na and HCO3 is added.
