Bile
  • One of the main functions of the liver is to secrete between 600-1200ml/day bile
  • Bile has an important role in fat digestion and absorption as
  the bile salts - cholesterol metabolites sythesised in hepatocytes - emulsify large fat particles into minute particles that can be attacked by lipases;
aids in the transport and absorption of the digested fat products to and into the intestinal mucosa through the formation of micelles.
  • bile also serves as a means for excretion of several waste products from the blood, such as bilirubin and a large quantity of drugs that are metabilised by the liver.
