- Up to 94% of the bile salts are reabsorbed by active
transport in the distal ilieum, enter the portal blood and pass to the
liver where they are reabsorbed by the venous sinusoids.
- around 20g of bile salts are
required to digest and absorb 100g of dietary fat but only about 5 g
are present at any one time and only 0.5g /day is synthesised by the
liver the rest is due to recirculation.
- on average each bile salt molecule recirculates 18
times before being lost in the faeces.
