Thyroid Hormone Mechanism

The sequence of events for thyroid hormone would be the following:

  1. The hormone is freed from the carrier protein and enters the cell.

  2. It binds to its receptor in the cytoplasm..

  3. The cytoplasmic receptor carries the hormone tothe nucleus, where it is released and passes through the nuclear membrane.

  4. In the nucleus, it binds to a second receptor and the hormone receptor complex binds to promoter areas on the genes of interest.

  5. The cell begins to produce the appropriate gene products.
