Mechanisms for achieving Hyperosmolality of the Medullary Interstitium /contd...

3. Diffusion of Urea from the Collecting Duct

As water diffuses out of the collecting duct in the outer medulla, the concentration of urea inside the collecting duct increases. This results in the diffusion of urea out of the collecting duct in the inner medulla and into the thin ascending limb of the loop of Henle. Thus there would be a further increase in the osmolality of the medullary interstitium.
