As already seen in the chapter dealing with respiration, the respiratory system is able to compensate for changes in the acid/base balance by increasing or decreasing ventilatory rate. This would result in an increase or decrease of pCO₂ in the blood. Thus changes are compensated at cost, i.e. changes in the bicarbonate pool.
