B-Lymphocytes

  • secrete soluble substances called Antibodies into the body's fluids, or humors; thus known as humoral immunity.
  • Antibodies interact with circulating antigens such as bacteria and toxic molecules.
  • Each B cell programmed to make one specific antibody, e.g. one will make an antibody against the common cold, another against tetanus
  • When the specific antigen is met, each B cell gives rise to many large plasma cells.
  • A plasma cell can produce a large quantity of antibody molecules.
  • As each plasma cell descends from a given B cell that are all members of the same family, or clones, the antibodies that are produced from these plasma cells are identical.
