Adrenergic Nerve Endings
 
  • entirely extrinsic
  • generally relax GIT by the inhibitory effect of noradrenaline on the neurones of the enteric system
  • strong sympathetic stimulation can block movement

 

Non-Adrenergic, Non-Cholinergic (NANC) Nerve Endings

 
  • enteric ganglia mainly secrete Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP), Nitric oxide
  • relax smooth musculature of intestinal tract below bolus of food
