Aldosterone is the main mineralocorticoid produced by the adrenal glands. Like the other steroids aldosterone acts by binding to a cellular receptor. The hornomne/receptor combination would then act as a DNA binding factor to increase DNA transcription, translation and hence protein production.

In the case of aldosterone, the main protein that has its production enhanced, is the sodium/potassium pump. Thus aldosterone increases the absorption of sodium whilst increasing potassium secretion.
