The loop of Henle is composed of a descending and an ascending limb. The descending limb and the first part of the ascending limb (the thin ascending limb) are composed of simple squamous epithelium. The thick ascending limb is composed of cuboidal epithelium.

The main role of the loop of Henle is to form a concentration gradient so as the reabsorb water and solutes.
