NEUTROPHILS

- dominate white blood cell in the bloodstream
- are smaller than macrophages
- nucleus with 2-5 lobes interconnected with fine strands

- characterized by a multilobed nucleus and granular cytoplasm which is not stained by certain histological dyes

- granules contain bactericidal compounds such as myeloperoxidase and lysozyme
- glycogen stores allow the cell to function under anaerobic conditions
- major defense against pus-forming bacteria
- usually circulate in bloodstream for short period (9-10 hrs) then enter body tissues where they are actively motile and act to phagocytose and digest invading bacteria, part of acute inflammatory response
