The Rhesus (Rh) Blood Groups

  • In addition to the ABO system, the next important system is the Rhesus (Rh) group.
  • There are six common types of Rh antigens or factors: C, D, E, c, d and e.
  • The type D antigen is the most common and is also the most antigenic of the six. Thus when one refers to the Rh system, one is usually referring to the D type.
  • Someone that has inherited the D antigen is considered to be Rh +ve, while someone that does not express the D antigen, is considered to be Rh -ve.
