Mixing Movements

 

  • Though present in all parts of the gut, mixing movements differ in action in the different parts of the gut.

  • Churning movments - Peristaltic movements against a closed sphincter results in churning e.g. chruning movments of the stomach.

  • Local constricitng movements occuring every few centimetres lasting for a couple of seconds result in the segmentation or chopping of the bolus.
