Gastro-Intestinal Tract Motility

  • Similar to the heart muscle, gastrointestinal motility involves both contraction AND relaxation.

  • Contraction results in the mixing of the bolus particles and ezymes, propulsion or restriction of propulsion .

  • Relaxation is an essential component of the peristaltic reflex as the bolus pushed to an area of relaxation as well as being involved in the the accomodation reflex.
