    - to mix food with digestive secretions
    - to circulate chyme so that mucosal contact is maximal
    - to propel contents in a net distal direction
    - to clear residua left over from the digestive process
    - to transport continuing secretions from the upper gut during fasting

  • major site of digestion and absorption of nutrients divided into 3 segments

    • duodenum (20 cm)

    • jejunum (2.5 m)

    • ileum (3.6m)
