Liver
  • The Liver is the largest and heaviest organ in the body.
  • Consists of 2 main lobes, Right and Left lobe.
  • The organ is reddish brown in color, located under the diaphragm in the upper right quadrate of the abdomen.
  • Blood flow to the liver in the rate of 15 mL/minute.
BLOOD SUPPLY
  • The liver receives a double supply of blood.
  • From the hepatic artery it obtains oxygenated blood, and
  • from the hepatic portal vein it receives deoxygenated blood containing newly absorbed nutrients.
  • Nutrients are stored or used to make new materials. Poisons are detoxified while products that are manufactured by the hepatic cells and nutrients needed by other cells are secreted back into the blood.
  • The blood then drains into the central vein and eventually passes into a hepatic vein.
